ASI Cable I

ASI, or AS-I, AS-Interface (Actuator Sensor Interface) technology was developed in the 1980s as a solution for parallel cabling of actuator and sensors in factory automation and process technology.

The ASI technology is a master open system which offers cost saving, flexibility, compatibility and ease of installation, based on a transmission medium: the well known AS-I interface cable. This is an unshielded two-wire asymmetric yellow flat cable, which can be used for transmission of signals (sensors, actuators) and also for low-voltage power supply. The asymmetric shape of the cable is design to protect against reverse polarity; the thickness and material of the same are designed to allow simple insulation-displacement connection, resulting in simple, fast and safe installation. There is only one single size and shape of ASI cable, thus simplifying the selection and inventory of components.

The introduction of ASI cable requires some common components in the installation to be designed specially to accommodate it; in particular cable glands must be equipped with shaped seals. This allows to maintain strain relief and Ingress Protection (IP or NEMA) sealing characteristics, equivalent to those of a system using traditional round cables.

ITC offers a series of inserts specially shaped for one or two ASI Interface cables, to be mounted inside its cable glands.
